Superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixers are the most sensitive heterodyne receivers in the millimeter and submillimeter wave regime. The recent development of improved Nb/AlN/NbN junctions, which combine a high gap voltage with a high critical current density, provides a pathway to enhance mixer performance at higher frequencies. We have designed and fabricated an SIS mixer employing this technology for the 850 GHz . The receiver demonstrates outstanding noise performance across most of the targeted band, with a measured noise temperature below 400 K.
