Hubble and Webb: The Power of Synergy Between Space and Ground-based Platforms

Author(s): Jennifer Wiseman (NASA)

Presenter: Jennifer Wiseman (NASA)

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the new Webb Space Telescope (JWST) are now offering a powerful complement to each other with ground-based arrays to explore new regimes of astrophysics. Hubble’s upgraded and unique capabilities in ultraviolet astrophysics provide powerful views of energetic accretion onto forming exoplanets as well as outflows from protostars, aging stars, and supernovae. Webb’s sensitivity in infrared bands provides high resolution glimpses of planet forming zones around stars as well as the character of star formation in the earliest protogalaxies ever detected. Combining these with the high resolution capabilities of ground-based millimeter and sub-millimeter arrays, new revelations about the precise nature of star and planet formation and stellar evolution are now possible in both the local and early universe. This talk will describe the new capabilities of Hubble and Webb and their synergies now possible with ground-based facilities. These platforms together can now address with new precision the most pressing questions in areas of international astrophysics, including multiple facets of Time Domain astronomy as well as the character of recently discovered exoplanets.
