Subaru Data Reduction Winter School 2016
December 7(Wed)-9(Fri), 2016
NCU, Taoyuan City, Taiwan

Announcement

National Central University (NCU) and Academia Sinica, Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics(ASIAA) in Taiwan, Subaru Telescope, and Graduate University for Advanced Studies (SOKENDAI) are pleased to announce the “Subaru Data Reduction Winter School 2016” that will be held in NCU in Taoyuan City, Taiwan.

The school is held as a SOKENDAI Winter School that has been opening series of schools every year covering wide field of sciences. This school is organized by a collaboration with NCU and ASIAA in Taiwan, Subaru Telescope and SOKENDAI (The Graduate University for Advanced Studies), and is opened to not only students in Taiwan and Japan, but also students and young postdoctoral fellows in East Asia who have interests in optical/infrared astronomy, in particular in observations with the Subaru Telescope.

The main purpose of this winter school is to provide the graduate students and junior post-docs in Taiwan and Japan, as well as China, Korea, and other East Asian countries, with an opportunity to learn the data analysis process of Subaru telescope instruments. Three instruments (Hyper Suprime-Cam, MOIRCS, and HDS) have been chosen for this winter school, and the experienced NAOJ staffs will be invited for the lectures and tutoring sessions, including

HSC (Hyper Suprime-Cam) : optical imaging
Instruction and demonstration of data reduction
MOIRCS (Multi-Object Infrared Camera and Spectrograph) : infrared imaging spectroscopy
Full reduction using pipeline
HDS (High Dispersion Spectrograph) : optical spectroscopy
Data reduction without pipeline to learn reduction of echelle spectra

Application

The winter school will offer a series of lectures and data reduction experience with the Subaru data. Prospect participants are graduate students studying astronomy and astrophysics in universities and junior post-docs in Taiwan and Japan, as well as in Korea, China, and other East Asian countries. For HSC and MOIRCS, desktop computers are provided for data analysis. For MOIRCS, participants are expected to have basic knowledge and experience of IRAF and Linux/Mac computer systems. For HDS, participants are expected to have a laptop computer with IRAF, and basic knowledge and experience of Linux/Mac. Full-time participation is required during the school.

The number of participants will be limited to ~20 (roughly 10 from Taiwan, 5 from Japan, 5 from China, Korea, and other East Asian countries) in total. The selection will be made by the organizers, based on the submitted applications if the applications exceed the above limitations. A written reference/recommendation letter by his/her supervisor is mandatory for the application. Some travel support will be provided to cover the expenses for participating the meeting. If you need the travel support, please notify it in the application form

To apply to the winter school, please fill the application form online. The deadline is October 24, 2016.
