Statistical X-ray studies of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) indicate an increase in the fraction of obscured AGN in the early universe. This suggests a change in the amount of material within the line of sight towards the AGN which cannot be explained without changes in the structure of the AGN. Recent models of galaxies interstellar medium suggest galaxies in the early universe have a larger gas fraction. Hence, the increased fraction of obscured AGN may be driven by the larger ISM gas density in the early universe. X-ray observations alone cannot distinguish between the gas associated with the AGN structure or the interstellar medium. By using observations of the cold dust continuum in the millimeter, we can estimate gas mass in the AGN host galaxy. Here, we present preliminary results using far-infrared and submillimeter observations combined with host galaxy size measurements from the JWST to estimate the ISM density and Hydrogen column density along the line sight.
