A flyby event caught in action?

Z CMa is a pre-main sequence binary system embedded in its birth cradle. Both stars are undergoing outbursts at the moment. Previous Subaru observations have revealed a peculiar linear streamer extending for over 1000 AU from the binary. Recently, we carried out ALMA and JVLA continuum emission and CO observations of Z CMa. A point source in dust emission has been identified along the extension of the streamer. Hydrodynamics simulations have shown that such a configuration can be explained if the newly identified point source is a star that has recently flew by and perturbed the Z CMa disk system.
