What's inside a distant Sunyayev-Zel'dovich cluster?
Presenter: Attila Kovacs (Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian)
We present results from a preliminary SMA study of one of the most distant (z ~ 1.1) Sunyayev-Zel'dovich (S-Z) clusters known. High-z clusters probe large-scale structure in an era in which clusters still actively form and evolve. well before the epoch of relaxation at z~0.5. The inter-cluster gas (ICG) medium of distant clusters should be more turbulent, with dynamical features that are detectable in their S-Z signature. Using the SMA to observe around the S-Z null of 225 GHz, we detect kinetic S-Z substructure, bright cluster-core galaxies (BGCs) and (lensed) high-z galaxies via the CO ladder.
