The main science goal of SPICA is to reveal enrichment of the Universe with metal and dust leading to the formation of the habitable world. For this goal, SPICA investigates (1) Metal and dust enrichment through galaxy formation
and (2) Star and Planetary formation to habitable systems, through the mid-to-far spectroscopy and far-infrared polarimetry.
The SPICA Mid-infrared Instrument (SMI), covering a mid-infrared wavelength of 12 - 36 micron with three spectral channels (LR, MR and HR) and imaging function (CAM), is designed to make a significant contribution to these science objectives.
I briefly review the requirement flow from the SPICA science objectives to the SMI specifications,
in addition to the SMI current design.
