Oral Presentation

ISM Surveys from FAST

Presenter: Di Li (National Astronomical Observatories)

The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) is the largest single-dish radio facility in the world. The progress of commissioning since Sep. 25, 2016, is beyond expectation, as demonstrated by discoveries already being made during the test observations. I will discuss here our survey plan, dubbed, a Commensal Radio Astronomy FasT Survey (CRAFTS), which aims to deliver pulsar, ISM, galaxies, and FRB data stream simultaneously in drift-scan mode. Such a survey will provide a state-of-art data set of the gaseous environment of the MilkyWay. Through absorption measurements, in particular, we will be able dramatically improve our knowledge of the excitation, quantity, and evolution (such as molecular cloud formation) of the ISM. In addition to this all-sky survey, I will also discuss more focus study of the dark molecular gas (DMG) with FAST.
