Oral Presentation

JWST: Star and Planet Formation GTOs

Author(s): Douglas Johnstone (NRC/HIA)

Presenter: Douglas Johnstone (National Research Council Canada / Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics)

JWST will launch in 2019. I will begin with a brief introduction to the wide range of instruments and observing modes available on this space telescope. I will then outline specific star and planet formation science that is planned during the GTO (and possibly ERS) campaigns. Highlights include extinction mapping of pre-stellar cores, imaging and spectroscopy of YSOs, coronagraphic imaging of debris disks, hunting for planets in formation around young stars, searching for the low end of the mass function in young clusters, observing massive star formation in the Galaxy, and examining star formation in the Local Group of Galaxies.
