TIARA Summer School on Numerical Astrophysics
July 13(Mon)-17(Fri), 2015
Taipei, Taiwan

Announcement

The aim of this summer school is to provide students with an overview of the techniques of numerical astrophysics, their role in theoretical astrophysics and in their use in interpretation of astronomical data. Lecture topics will highlight five major areas including N-body dynamics, hydrodynamics/magnetohydrodynamics, relativistic hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics, radiative transfer and computational tools (visualization and parallel computing). For each area state-of-the-art codes used by the astrophysical community will be described. The mornings will feature 80-minute lectures based on the forefront numerical techniques within the five major areas, and the afternoons will be devoted to hands-on experiences with laboratory sessions and more fundamental discussions and introductions of the algorithms and computing environments adopted. Examples include the Zeus code, Godunov schemes, Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics, and GPU Computing.

Local lodging will be provided for up to 40 students with priorities given to graduate students. The school is also open to active researchers worldwide, with priorities for the lab-sessions given to students and postdocs should seating and resources become limited. Wait-lists will be created and registered students and participants will be informed. All participants for the lab sessions should bring their own laptops meeting technical requirements for the operating systems. Further information will be available later for participants to download and install on their own laptops before the school.
