Opening the Submillimeter Window with JCMT: A New Frontier for Technosignature Searches

Author(s): Yuri Uno, Geoffrey Bower, Graham Bell, Sarah Graves

Presenter: Yuri Uno (NCKU)

While the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) has historically focused on lower GHz frequencies, the submillimeter regime remains largely unexplored. This frequency range offers a significantly quieter RFI environment and is uniquely resilient to the interstellar scattering that complicates transient searches toward the Galactic Center (GC).

In this talk, I will introduce a new collaboration with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) to search for technosignatures using SCUBA-2 data. We are developing a search pipeline for high-frequency pulses, specifically targeting the GC by utilizing SCUBA-2’s wide-field time-series data. I will discuss the analysis frameworks being adapted to process these datasets and our approach to identifying transient anomalies within complex astrophysical foregrounds. This work aims to establish a baseline for high-frequency SETI and demonstrates the utility of submillimeter mapping in broadening the current search space.
