JCMT-MeerKAT Synergy: Environmental Effects on the Cold ISM of Virgo Dwarf Galaxies

Presenter: Bumhyun Lee (Yonsei University)

Dwarf galaxies are the most abundant type of galaxy in nearby galaxy clusters. Because of their shallow gravitational potentials, cluster dwarfs are highly susceptible to environmental processes like tidal interaction and ram pressure stripping. These processes are expected to severely strip the cold gas components (HI and molecular gas), leading to the abrupt quenching of star formation. Thus, investigating these environmental effects on the cold ISM of dwarf galaxies is essential to obtain a better understanding of galaxy evolution. We recently carried out JCMT CO (2-1) observations for two synergistic JCMT-MeerKAT projects: a pilot CO survey of dwarfs in the Virgo cluster and a deep CO observation focusing on a specific Virgo jellyfish dwarf. In this talk, we introduce these two observing programs and present our preliminary results. Specifically, we highlight asymmetric HI distributions and supportive evidence for the complete removal of the cold ISM driven by environmental effects.
