Probing Hub–Filament 3D Geometry with JCMT SURFING survey: Serpens South

The 3D geometry is a major source of uncertainty when interpreting the physical conditions of hub–filament systems. Projection effects can bias key quantities such as filament length, density, velocity gradients, accretion rates, and their correlation with magnetic fields. As a result, it is often unclear whether the observed structures and kinematics reflect intrinsic physical variations or simply viewing geometry.

To address this, we introduce a novel method to infer the 3D geometry of hub–filament systems based on density estimates from multi-transition molecular line observations. We present preliminary results toward Serpens South, using data from the SURFING survey, as a demonstration. This work provides a new framework for interpreting filamentary structures in large-scale molecular line surveys.
