AKARI All-Sky–Selected ULIRGs: ALMA CO(2–1) Insights into Merger-Driven SMBH Growth
Presenter: Kianhong Lee (Nagoya University)
Ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) represent a short-lived but critical phase in galaxy evolution, during which both galaxies and their central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) undergo rapid growth. This phase plays a key role in shaping the observed correlation between galaxy and SMBH masses. The AKARI 90 μm all-sky survey provides a unique sample of the brightest and nearest ULIRGs at 0.1 < z < 1. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array CO(2–1) lines observations of five AKARI-selected ULIRGs at kpc resolution. These galaxies show diverse morphologies in both optical and molecular gas, indicating that they are in different merger stages. We find that galaxies at later merger stages tend to align more closely with the local stellar mass–black hole mass relation, highlighting the role of galaxy mergers in co-evolving SMBHs and their host galaxies.
