Oral Presentation
The METIS Project in ASIAA
Presenter: Chueh-Yi Chou (ASIAA)
METIS is the abbreviation of Mid-infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph, which will be one of the first-generation ELT instruments. It will cover the infrared wavelength range and take the advantage of the large aperture of the ELT, focusing on the studies of exoplanets, protoplnetary disks and formation of massive stars. The instrument consists a high contrast imager and a spectrograph. It is fully encased in a cryogenic environment to achieve good performances at mid-infrared wavelengths. METIS is capable of conducting imaging observations at 3 - 13um wavelength regime; and the imager is also capable of conducting low R (R ~ a few hundred to 1000) spectroscopic observations. Besides that, METIS is able to conduct high R (R ~100,000) IFU spectroscopic observations at L/M bands (3 - 5um) with a coronagraph in front of the IFU. To achieve diffraction-limited performance, METIS will work with a single-conjugate AO system. ASIAA is a member of the METIS consortium and mainly in charge of three parts: (1) development of chopper control electronics/software and its verification. (2) Development of wheel assemblies locates at the first pupil plane and and the second focal plane for the ADCs, masks, slits and filters. (3) Development of the supporting equipment for the final system assembly, integration and verification. I will report the contribution of ASIAA for METIS in detail.
