JWST: Early History and Early Results on Galaxy Evolution
Presenter: Myungshin Im (Seoul National University)
The idea of a large space telescope was proposed nearly 40 years ago, and finally, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has come true. In this talk, I will review the historical development of JWST and give a brief overview of its capability. This will include early predictions on how galaxies at high redshifts (z > 10) would look. In the latter part of the talk, I will review the early view of dusty star formation activities at the cosmic noon, highlighting some of our activities of studying submm galaxies with JCMT and JWST in the North Ecliptic Pole area. Furthermore, I will show some of the other promises of JWST in studying the evolution of early-type galaxies and distant quasars.
