ALMA Imaging of Distant Optically Dark Massive Galaxies
Presenter: Wei-Hao Wang (ASIAA)
We present deep ALMA 870 um continuum imaging of a sample of strongly lenses galaxies that are optically dark. They are selected from CLASH and HFF cluster fields based on their extremely red 1.6-to-4.5 um colors in the HST and Spitzer images. We successfully detected 12 out of 15 sources with ~0.11 mJy rms sensitivities. Thanks to the lensing amplification, this is by far the deepest imaging of such a population. The galaxies are massive, with stellar masses of 10^10 to 10^12 Msun, and have estimated redshifts of z~2.6 to 5.2. These represents a population that dominate the star formation density in the massive end at high redshifts, and yet missed by deep optical surveys.
