How fast is the evolution of galaxies in clusters?

Presenter: Benedetta Vulcani (INAF - OaPD)

Clusters of galaxies are important laboratories for the study of the physical processes that drive galaxy evolution. Clusters have been a testbed for studies of galaxy evolution for over 50 years, often anticipating discoveries that have been found to be universal several years later. In clusters galaxy formation proceeded at an accelerated pace compared to the rest of the universe. I will briefly summarise the most important observational results of galaxy evolution in clusters and focus on how cluster specific processes induce galaxy quenching and transformations on different timescales. I will also discuss the impact of these mechanisms on the ionised gas distribution.
