Oral Presentation
Connection between star formation activities in galaxy clusters and surrounding environment
Presenter: Myungshin Im (Seoul National University)
Galaxy clusters in the local universe have been noted as dominated by quiescent galaxy population, but it has been found recently that star formation rates (SFRs) in galaxy clusters rapidly increases toward higher redshifts. However, it is not yet clear what physical mechanism contributes to the marked increase in SFRs in distant clusters. Thanks to deep, large area survey data, it has not become possible to sample hundreds of clusters as a function of redshifts and study how their properties are linked with the surrounding large scale environment. The Infrared Medium-deep Survey (IMS) is 120 deg^2 NIR imaging survey of the sky, and it enables us to study large scale environment of galaxy clusters at z < 1.4. Based on our results, we suggest that the SFR activity in clusters at z ~ 1 is closely associated how well the cosmic web is feeding them. We will also present future prospects in the cluster study using the Subaru telescope in collaboration with the EAO countries.
