Mapping cometary comae with the SMA

Author(s): Chun-Hua Qi (CfA)

Presenter: Chunhua Qi (Harvard-Smithsonian CfA)

Measurement of primary volatiles that sublimed directly from the
comet nucleus, can reveal relative abundances of species
originally incorporated into a particular cometary nucleus, and therefore
information about the conditions under which the comet formed.
It is critical to obtain spatial information of multiple species
simultaneously due to the heterogeneous nature of comets.
I will describe the recent observations of comets with the SMA and
discuss advances in the analysis. Particularly I will focus on the
observations of the outbursting Jupiter Family comet 17P/Holmes in
2007. The significantly expanded capabilities of SMA
correlators will allow to assess the composition of comets with a
large sample of lines to probe the heterogeneity in the nucleus and
examine its relationship with cometary formation region.
