Supermassive black hole and hot gas “ecosystem” in M87
Presenter: Eugene Churazov (Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics)
We discuss the impact of the SMBH at the center of M87 on the hot, but cooling gas around it. The X-ray data are used to differentiate between different types of perturbations in the gas induced by the activity of the black hole and estimate the amount of energy supplied by it. In particular, one can distinguish the direct heating of the gas by shocks and slower heating by, e.g., dissipation of turbulent motions. Overall, the system seems to form a long-living “ecosystem” that self-regulates itself to avoid large excursions from quasi-equilibrium configuration.
