Task Description and Goals

Transit surveys have revealed a surprising result: close-in sub-Neptune planets are the most common type of exoplanet. Recent observations with JWST are beginning to uncover what these planets’ atmospheres are made of, but many key questions about their interior structures and long-term evolution remain unanswered. Over time, these planets shrink as a result of gravitational contraction and the loss of atmosphere driven by stellar radiation. We invite a motivated summer student to join us to study the coupled thermal and atmospheric mass-loss evolution of sub-Neptunes, using the open-source planetary interior code GASTLY.

Required Background

Students with coursework or interest in physics, astronomy, or a related field are especially encouraged to apply. Familiarity with basic programming (e.g., Python) is helpful; motivated students will receive guidance and mentoring throughout the project. Prior research experience is not necessary.
