A Search for Massive Failures around Milky Way Analogs

The formation and abundance of the lowest luminosity galaxies represents one of the most significant issues facing galaxy formation today. Recent work has shown that abundance and distribution of the subhalos in simulated Milky Way-like systems are inconsistent with the observed dynamics of Milky Way satellite. However, the Local Group is just one system with limited statistical power. In this work, we propose to observe 3 Milky Way analogs, cataloging their satellite populations with MMT/Hectospec, so as to measure the stellar mass function to low masses in halos comparable to that of the Milky Way.
