Announcement
This crash course is an introduction to the Python programming language in the context of solving problems in astrophysics and cosmology. The course will focus on the use of scientific Python libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, SymPy, and MatPlotLib. Topics to be covered include NumPy arrays, integration, interpolation, differential equations, linear algebra, Fourier transforms, I/O, plotting, statistics, and C/Fortran integration.
This crash course is open to all Taiwan-based astronomers, researchers and students. All participants should bring their own laptops meeting technical requirements for the operating systems. Further information will be available later for participants to download and install on their own laptops before the course. Lunchboxes will be provided for full-day attendance. Sign-ups are required.
Featured Lecturer - Paul Ricker (UIUC)
Prof. Paul Ricker is an associate professor of Astronomy at the University of Illinois and a research scientist at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. He applies large-scale numerical simulations on parallel computers to the solution of challenging problems in astrophysics and cosmology. His research interests currently include the evolution of galaxies and clusters of galaxies, binary stars, and supernovae. He also works on computer science/applied mathematics topics such as parallel numerical algorithm development, simulation code architecture, and grid-enabled cyberinfrastructure for astrophysics.
