Announcement
The Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (ASIAA) of Academia Sinica is holding "The Second ERG Mission Science Workshop" in Taipei, Taiwan during April 9-10, 2015. Associated with the workshop is a special "IDL Training Session" to be held on April 8, 2015.
The ERG (Exploration of energization and Radiation in Geospace) mission is a collaboration project between ISAS (Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan), NCKU (National Cheng Kung University) and ASIAA. The ERG satellite is scheduled to be launched in the summer of 2016 and will explore the dynamics in the radiation belts and the plasmasphere of the Earth, regions in the near-Earth space that are highly relevant to geomagnetic storms and a number of plasma processes involving energetic charged particles. The upcoming workshop, like the first ERG workshop held in April 2014, is open to the general space science community of Taiwan and aims to enhance the interactions between the Japanese team and Taiwanese scientists, so as to achieve the ultimate goal of forming strong collaborations and working groups on various research topics that may take advantage of the ERG data. The meeting will gather the core ERG members from Japan to report the current status of the mission, to introduce the designs of the instruments aboard the satellite and the overall capabilities of the ERG mission. Participants from Taiwan will have the option of contributing oral presentations of their work that is relevant to the ERG science mission.
What is new for the upcoming workshop will be a training session on SPEDAS, a piece of software that will allow the user to access and perform various tasks with the ERG data when they are available. The workshop participants will be able to acquire hands-on experience with the software in the training session. As the operation of SPEDAS requires the programming language of IDL (Interactive Data Language), a special IDL training session will be held at ASIAA one day before the beginning of the workshop to provide an opportunity for those workshop participants who are not familiar with IDL to learn the basics of the programming language. Note that participants in the SPEDAS or IDL training session should bring their own laptops.
We welcome all interested scientists and students in local universities and research groups to participate in the ERG workshop and the associated training session on IDL. For more information of ERG, please visit:
