The Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, under the auspices of the Academica Sinica in Taipei, is planning a workshop to be held in Taipei on 17-20 May, 1999, entitled

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together a small group of approximately 30 young researchers of Chinese descent who are doing exciting work in observational and theoretical astrophysics. The main objective of the conference is to congregate the most promising young scientists who share a common cultural and professional background, with the hope that such a forum will foster future interaction, scientific collaboration, and better awareness of the development of astronomy in the international Chinese community.

Several more established scientists, whose participation will enrich the program, will also be invited. We are soliciting participants from the United States, Canada, Europe, mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The subject matter of the conference is left deliberately broad --- Galactic and extragalactic observations, cosmology, theoretical astrophysics, and future ground-based and space-borne astronomical instrumentation. The format of the meeting will be structured such that there will be ample time for informal discussions and casual interactions.

We are currently planning to hold the workshop on the grounds of the Academica Sinica's Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (ASIAA), located in Nankang, at the outskirts of Taipei, Taiwan. We are, however, looking into the possibility of an alternative venue which is more secluded to optimize interaction. ASIAA will provide travel support up to US$750 for attendees from the US, Europe, and other faraway places, with extra consideration for students and special circumstances. All the local expenses, including transportation, accommodations and meals, will be covered.

The attached announcement gives additional details, including information on the SOC, the LOC, a preliminary program, and a list of invitees. We will soon set up a web site for this workshop, where future announcements and developments will be posted.

On behalf of the Scientific Organizing Committee, we would like to invite you to attend the meeting. We would like you to give an oral presentation (the exact length is yet to be finalized, but it may be up to 30 minutes) of your work. Please notify us as soon as possible whether you accept this invitation. Fill in the attatched confirmation form and return it by e-mail to
