Playing with Radiative Transfer

Task Description and Goals

The rapid increasing power of both state-of-art observational and computational facilities is achieving unprecedented complexity, leading to revolutionary discoveries and challenges in astrophysical research. Innovative approaches for bridging the two ends is desired to enhance the scientific output. Given the difficulties in extracting the physical and chemical properties directly from the observables (radiation in general) in the conventional way, a "forward modeling" approach, in which we convert conceptual or theoretical models via radiative transfer calculations into observational quantities and try to find the best (set of) match to the real observational results among a range of physical or/and chemical parameters, is greatly advantageous.

In this project, we will test and make further development of our in-house three dimensional radiative transfer software package SPARX .

Required Background

Good knowledge in colleague level physics and mathematics is required. Familiarity with linux environment and python programming language is a plus.
