Utilizing CFHT/MegaCam Images for Identifying X-ray Sources in Globular Clusters

We present a method and summarize results of identifying X-ray sources in globular clusters (GCs) with high resolution and wide-field images. By using the Chandra X-ray Observatory, we obtain accurate X-ray positions of GC X-ray sources. When combined with high resolution images of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we can identify the optical counterparts, providing clues to the nature of the population. However, secure identifications were scarce because of the crowding of the environment. To overcome this problem, we attempt to use ground-based wide-field optical images (e.g., CFHT/MegaCAM and ESO/WFI) to register the Chandra and HST images, achieving a high precision relative astrometry of ~0.1 arcsec. We can then identify the optical counterparts of the GC X-ray sources with HST images and determine their nature. We have applied this method on several GCs and have a large multi-wavelength program to investigate the formation scenarios of GC X-ray sources. In addition, we for the first time localize the putative intermediate-mass black hole in the giant GC G1 in M31.
