On the use of medium bands for `IMAKA

Author(s): Burgarella et al.

Presenter: Denis Burgarella (Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille)

The `IMAKA faisability study concludes that median angular resolutions of 0.3 arcsec in the visible across a one-degree field of view are within reach of CFHT.
If we add to these performances limiting magnitudes of the order of m_AB ~ 27, we are left with an exceptional instrument that can optimistically compete and positively complete all the instruments already in use and planned in the near- to medium-range future.
Now, if we are even more ambitious, can we imagine some added-value to `IMAKA that makes it even more powerfull at the headfront of the science?
To address this question, we will present what advantages a set of medium-band filters (10 < R < 30) would bring to `IMAKA by considerably improving a number of key diagnostics tools for the age/metallicity of stellar population, for the estimation of galaxy physical parameters from SED fitting and for the estimation of redshifts with a gain by a factor of 10 over broad-bands redshifts.
