Oral Presentation

Science with GYES

Author(s): P. Francois, Gyes Science Team

Presenter: Francois Patrick (Observatoire de Paris)

The mechanisms of formation and evolution of the Milky-Way are encoded in the location, kinematics and chemistry of the stars. Gaia will provide all this information (very accurately for the astrometric quantities) for 1% of the stars of the Milky-Way and will therefore revolutionise the understanding of our Galaxy. However,
for a number of points, Gaia may not be sufficient by itself, and would benefit hugely from additional ground-based spectroscopic information (chemical or/and line-of-sight velocities). The main driver for GYES aims precisely at obtaining such information.
